Hydratoidut

Hydratoidut is a term used in Finnish-speaking technical contexts to describe substances that contain water within their crystal structure or are otherwise hydrated. In mineralogy and chemistry, hydration refers to the incorporation of water molecules into a material, either as water of crystallization or as a structural component. Hydrated materials are contrasted with anhydrous ones, which lack bound water.

Water can be part of a compound in different ways. In many minerals, water is incorporated as water of crystallization, forming hydrates with fixed chemical formulas (for example, gypsum, CaSO4·2H2O; copper sulfate pentahydrate, CuSO4·5H2O; mirabilite, Na2SO4·10H2O). Other hydrated substances may include minerals that retain adsorbed or interlayer water. Some systems also exhibit clathrate hydrates, where water forms a lattice that traps gas molecules such as methane within the solid structure under low temperature and high pressure.

Hydration and dehydration are common processes affecting hydratoidut. Hydration can increase mass and alter mechanical properties, while dehydration upon heating or drying can change phase, color, solubility, and stability. The study of hydratoidut intersects mineralogy, solid-state chemistry, geology, and materials science, informing topics from rock-water interactions to industrial drying, preservation, and the exploration of energy resources.
