Hydratatieenergie, also known as hydration energy, refers to the energy released when a substance dissolves in a solvent, specifically when ions are surrounded by solvent molecules. This process involves the interaction between the solute particles and the solvent molecules. In the case of ionic compounds dissolving in water, the water molecules, with their polar nature, orient themselves around the positive and negative ions. The oxygen atoms of water, being partially negative, are attracted to positive ions, while the hydrogen atoms, being partially positive, are attracted to negative ions. This attraction leads to the formation of a hydration shell around each ion.

The energy released during this solvation process is the hydration energy. It is an exothermic process, meaning it releases heat. Hydration energy is a crucial factor in determining the solubility of ionic compounds. A higher hydration energy, meaning stronger interactions between the ions and water molecules, generally favors dissolution. However, the overall energy change for dissolution also depends on the lattice energy of the ionic compound, which is the energy required to break apart the ionic lattice. The interplay between lattice energy and hydration energy dictates whether a salt will dissolve readily or not. Factors such as the charge density of the ions and the polarity of the solvent influence the magnitude of the hydration energy.
