Hwasun

Hwasun County, also known as Hwasun-gun (華順郡), is a county in Jeollanam-do, South Korea. It lies in the western part of the province and is part of the Honam region. The administrative seat is Hwasun-eup. The county is divided into several administrative districts, including eup and myeon.

The area has a long history of settlement and is characterized by a largely rural landscape with a mix of low mountains and agricultural plains. The climate is temperate, with four distinct seasons that influence farming and local life.

Hwasun is notable for its cultural heritage, particularly the dolmen sites. It contains fields that are part of the Gochang, Hwasun and Ganghwa Dolmen Sites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 2000. The dolmens are Bronze Age megalithic tombs and represent one of the most extensive and well-preserved clusters of such structures on the Korean Peninsula.

Economically, the county is mainly agricultural, reflecting its rural character, with related small-scale manufacturing and service activities concentrated in the urban areas. Tourism linked to the dolmen sites and local natural and cultural attractions also contributes to the local economy.

Transportation in the area is supported by regional road networks and bus services linking Hwasun with nearby cities, including Gwangju and other parts of Jeollanam-do.
