Humala

Ollanta Humala Tasso (born June 27, 1962) is a Peruvian politician and former military officer who served as the 65th President of Peru from 2011 to 2016. He emerged from a politically active family, with his father Isaac Humala and his brother Antauro Humala involved in nationalist currents. Humala pursued a military career in Peru and later entered politics, rising to the rank of officer before turning to public life.

Humala led the Peruvian Nationalist Party and unsuccessfully contested the presidency in 2006 before winning in 2011, defeating Keiko Fujimori in the runoff. His presidency combined a focus on social inclusion and poverty reduction with a commitment to macroeconomic stability and continued openness to foreign investment. His government pursued programs to expand access to education, health, and social services, while aiming to balance populist rhetoric with technocratic governance. The administration faced ongoing debates over governance, corruption perceptions, and how best to address inequality in a growing economy.

After leaving office in 2016, Humala remained a prominent figure in Peruvian politics. He and his wife, Nadine Heredia, were investigated in connection with corruption cases related to the Odebrecht scandal; they have denied wrongdoing. Humala has continued to participate in public discourse and political life, with assessments of his presidency varying among observers and reflecting Peru’s broader debates over development, inclusion, and governance.
