Hulladéklerakókra are sites designated for the disposal of waste materials. These facilities play a crucial role in managing the large volumes of refuse generated by human activities. Historically, waste disposal often involved uncontrolled dumping, leading to significant environmental and health hazards. Modern landfills, however, are engineered to minimize these risks.

Engineered landfills are designed with several containment layers to prevent the leaching of harmful substances into the soil and groundwater. These layers typically include a liner made of compacted clay or synthetic materials, followed by a drainage system to collect leachate, which is the liquid that forms when rainwater filters through waste. The collected leachate is then treated before being discharged.

Above the leachate collection system, waste is deposited and compacted. Once a section of the landfill is full, it is covered with a layer of soil or other material. This process is repeated until the entire landfill reaches its capacity. Finally, the entire site is capped with a multi-layered cover system to prevent water infiltration and control gas emissions.

The gases produced by the decomposition of organic waste, primarily methane and carbon dioxide, are also managed. In modern landfills, these gases can be collected and used to generate electricity, turning a potential environmental problem into an energy source. Proper management of hulladéklerakókra is essential for protecting public health and the environment, though efforts are increasingly focused on waste reduction, reuse, and recycling to minimize reliance on landfilling.
