Hulevesialtaat

Hulevesialtaat, also known as stormwater retention basins or detention basins, are man-made ponds or constructed wetlands designed to manage stormwater runoff. Their primary purpose is to collect and temporarily store excess rainwater and snowmelt that flows from impervious surfaces like roads, parking lots, and rooftops. This collected water is then slowly released into the environment, preventing downstream flooding and erosion.

These basins play a crucial role in urban water management by reducing the peak flow of stormwater. By holding water back, they lessen the strain on conventional drainage systems and natural waterways, which can become overwhelmed during heavy rainfall. This controlled release also allows sediment and pollutants, such as oil, grease, and debris washed from streets, to settle out before the water enters rivers, lakes, or groundwater. This process contributes to improved water quality.

Hulevesialtaat can be designed in various ways, some being permanently wet (retention basins) and others designed to be mostly dry, filling only after significant rainfall (detention basins). They can be landscaped with vegetation, creating attractive natural areas that also enhance their ecological function by filtering pollutants and providing habitat for wildlife.
