Hublänge

Hublänge is a German term used in mechanical engineering to denote the axial travel, or stroke length, of a hub or hub‑like component during operation. It describes the distance the hub moves along its axis between its extreme positions in a given mechanism. The concept is relevant in assemblies that combine rotational and translational motion, including cam‑driven hubs, hydraulic and pneumatic actuators with hub‑based linkages, and certain clutch or gear setups.

In practice, hublänge is determined by the mechanism’s geometry and the constraints of connected parts. It is typically specified in design documentation and technical data sheets to ensure compatibility with mating components, control systems, and to evaluate dynamic performance, energy requirements, and wear.

Measurement is performed using displacement sensors, dial indicators, or laser‑based metrology during functional tests. Tolerances reflect manufacturing variation, assembly clearances, and thermal effects.

Design considerations include ensuring adequate hub length to accommodate full travel without interference, and balancing stiffness, weight, and bearing loads. The choice of hublänge affects actuation force, response time, and the life span of bushings or bearings in the hub.
