Hostipõhiste

Hostipõhiste is an Estonian term that translates to "host-based" in English. It describes a type of system, application, or security measure where the primary logic, processing, or control resides on the individual host or endpoint rather than on a central server or network device.

In the context of computer security, host-based security refers to protection mechanisms that are installed and managed directly on an individual computer or server. Examples include host-based intrusion detection systems (HIDS), antivirus software, and host-based firewalls. These systems monitor activities, detect threats, and enforce security policies at the level of the individual machine they are protecting.

In network administration, host-based access control lists (ACLs) are used to define which network traffic is permitted to or from a specific host. This differs from network-based ACLs, which are typically configured on routers or firewalls to control traffic for an entire network segment.

The concept of host-based solutions emphasizes the importance of securing each individual component of a system, recognizing that a compromise on one host could potentially affect others. This approach complements network-based security measures by providing a layered defense strategy. While host-based solutions offer granular control and can react quickly to local threats, they also require individual management and can increase the administrative overhead for large numbers of hosts.
