Hopeaseoksista, often translated as silver alloys, are mixtures of silver with one or more other metals. The addition of other metals, such as copper, is primarily done to increase the hardness and durability of pure silver. Pure silver, while beautiful, is a very soft metal and can easily be scratched or deformed.

The most common silver alloy used in jewelry and tableware is sterling silver. Sterling silver consists of 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. This ratio is standardized and is often stamped with "925" or "Sterling" to indicate its purity. Other silver alloys exist with varying compositions depending on their intended application. The properties of a silver alloy are directly influenced by the metals it is mixed with. Copper, the most frequent alloying element, enhances the metal's strength and wear resistance. However, copper can also contribute to tarnishing, a chemical reaction with sulfur compounds in the air that causes the silver's surface to darken. Jewelers and silversmiths select specific alloys to balance aesthetic appeal with practical considerations for the longevity and use of the final product. The choice of alloy impacts not only the physical characteristics but also the cost and workability of the silver.
