Holzstoff

Holzstoff is a term used primarily in German-speaking contexts to denote wood-derived pulp or fiber material that serves as the base for papermaking and other wood-based products. It refers to cellulose fibers obtained from wood, produced by mechanical processing or chemical pulping, and is closely related to Zellstoff (cellulose pulp).

Two main branches are recognized: mechanical pulps produced by grinding or refining wood, and chemical pulps produced by cooking wood chips to separate cellulose from lignin. Mechanical pulps retain more of the original wood components and offer higher yield, but fibers are shorter and less bright; they are commonly used for newsprint and lower-grade papers. Chemical pulps, including Kraft (sulfate) and sulfite varieties, yield stronger and whiter fibers and underpin most printing and office papers.

Processing involves refining the fibers, removing lignin, bleaching (in many cases), and forming sheets or using fibers as a base for composites. Dissolving pulp is a highly refined chemical pulp used for textiles (rayon) and other applications. Recycled paper is also a source of Holzstoff, contributing to circular material use.

Environmental considerations include sustainable forestry, chemical recovery, energy use, and water management in pulping mills. Advances focus on reducing bleaching chemicals, increasing yield, and improving recyclability.
