The accurate display of the lunar phase requires a precise gear train. Most commonly, a 59-tooth gear is used, which represents two full lunar cycles (approximately 59 days). A small indicator or aperture on the dial then reveals a portion of the rotating disc, showing the relevant phase of the moon.
