Hohengrad

Hohengrad is a mid-sized city in the fictional nation of Northmark, in the central highlands along the Hohen River. It is the administrative capital of Hohen Province and serves as a regional hub for government, commerce, and culture. As of 2023, the population is about 120,000.

The city sits on the Hohen Plateau at about 260 meters above sea level. It has a temperate climate with warm summers and cold winters. The Hohen River runs through the urban core, shaping neighborhoods and providing water resources.

Hohengrad traces its origins to a 12th-century fortress guarding trade routes. It grew into a market town in the medieval period and industrialized in the 19th century with textiles and metalwork.

The economy is diversified, with services, manufacturing, and logistics. Key sectors include textiles, machinery, and food processing. The city hosts a regional university and several research institutes contributing to innovation.

The Old Town preserves timber-framed houses. Notable landmarks include Hohengrad Cathedral, the Royal Gate, and the riverside Promenade. The annual Founders’ Festival highlights regional crafts.

Hohengrad is served by a central train station on the national network. A regional airport lies north of the city, and there is a bus and tram system linking neighborhoods, the university, and business districts.

The city is ethnically diverse and multilingual, with Northmarish as the majority language and several minority communities.
