Hofarcade

Hofarcade is a contemporary shopping arcade located in the central district of Hof, a mid-sized town in Europe. Conceived as a mixed-use pedestrian thoroughfare, it links the historic town center with newer commercial zones and provides a sheltered public space for shopping, dining, and social activity. The development combines retail units, cafés, and service businesses arranged around a glass-roofed concourse and a sequence of arcades that face onto streets and courtyards.

The design emphasizes accessibility, daylighting, and sustainability. The project includes step-free access, elevators, and wayfinding that serves visitors with varying mobility needs. Interiors use natural materials, a restrained color palette, and energy-efficient lighting. The central atrium serves as a venue for markets, performances, and seasonal exhibitions, while external façades connect with adjacent streets.

The project progressed through urban-planning processes and was developed with input from local stakeholders. Since opening, Hofarcade has hosted daily shopping alongside periodic events, such as markets and cultural programs, intended to draw visitors to the town center and support local businesses.

Hofarcade is intended to act as a catalyst for downtown vitality by concentrating retail and public space in a walkable corridor. Opinions vary: supporters highlight increased foot traffic and revitalized streets, while critics question competition with independent shops and the long-term maintenance costs.
