Hoelun

Hoelun (c. 1130 – c. 1220) was a Mongolian woman who was the mother of Temüjin, later known as Genghis Khan. She was born into the Olkhonud clan. Hoelun was married to Yesügei, the chieftain of the Borjigin clan, and together they had four sons, including Temüjin, and a daughter.

After Yesügei's death, Hoelun played a crucial role in the survival and upbringing of her children. She is credited with instilling strong values and resilience in Temüjin during their difficult early years, which were marked by poverty and conflict. When Temüjin was still a young boy, his family was abandoned by their clan and forced to live a nomadic existence. Hoelun is depicted in historical accounts as a strong and resourceful leader who protected her family from dangers and hardship.

Her influence on Temüjin's character and his rise to power is frequently mentioned in Mongolian historical chronicles, such as the Secret History of the Mongols. She is portrayed as a wise and courageous figure who guided her son through his formative experiences, contributing to the foundation of the Mongol Empire. Hoelun's legacy is primarily that of a formidable matriarch whose strength and guidance were instrumental in shaping one of history's most significant military and political leaders.
