Hlustuð

Hlustuð is a form attached to the Icelandic verb hlusta, meaning to listen. It is described as a past participle form that indicates listening has occurred and can function as an adjective or within certain verbal constructions. In everyday Icelandic, however, the most common ways to express “listened” are with the simple past hlustaði or with the periphrastic form hafa hlustað (to have listened).

In Icelandic grammar, participles vary to agree with gender and number when used attributively, and they participate in the formation of compound tenses. The form hlustuð is one of several participial variants derived from hlusta, and its appearance is relatively limited in modern standard language. For many speakers, hlusta-based participles other than the standard hlustaður/hlustað are rarely used in ordinary narration.

Historically and in some dialects or formal registers, hlustuð can surface as an adjectival participle modifying a noun or appearing in predicative clauses.
