Hiusfollikkelit, also known as hair follicles, are small, cylindrical structures found in the skin of mammals, including humans. They are responsible for the growth, maintenance, and shedding of hair. Each follicle consists of several layers of cells, including the outer root sheath, the inner root sheath, and the hair matrix. The hair matrix is the active growing part of the follicle, where new hair cells are produced.

Hair follicles are distributed throughout the body, with the highest density found on the scalp, where they are responsible for the growth of head hair. Other areas with dense hair follicles include the eyebrows, eyelashes, and pubic region. The number and size of hair follicles can vary among individuals, contributing to differences in hair texture and density.

The life cycle of a hair follicle typically involves three phases: the anagen phase, the catagen phase, and the telogen phase. In the anagen phase, the follicle is actively growing hair. The catagen phase is a transitional phase where the follicle begins to shrink and prepare for the next phase. In the telogen phase, the follicle rests and sheds the hair shaft. After the telogen phase, the cycle repeats with a new anagen phase.

Hair follicles play a crucial role in the body's overall health and appearance. They are influenced by various factors, including genetics, hormones, and environmental conditions. Conditions such as alopecia, or hair loss, can result from disruptions in the normal functioning of hair follicles.
