Hitsaussuojakypärä, known in English as a welding helmet, is a crucial piece of personal protective equipment designed to shield the eyes and face of a welder from intense ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) radiation, sparks, and hot metal fragments produced during welding processes. These helmets are constructed with a dark, heat-resistant material, typically a durable plastic, and feature a specialized lens.

The primary function of the welding helmet's lens is to protect the welder's vision. Traditional helmets use passive lenses that are permanently tinted to a shade that reduces light intensity. In contrast, modern auto-darkening welding helmets (ADWH) incorporate advanced electronic sensors that detect the bright flash of a welding arc. Upon detection, the lens rapidly darkens to a pre-selected shade, typically ranging from shade 9 to 13, depending on the welding process and amperage. When the arc is extinguished, the lens automatically returns to a lighter, clear state, allowing the welder to see their work area without repeatedly lifting the helmet.

Beyond eye protection, welding helmets also safeguard the welder's face and neck from burns and physical injury. Many helmets are designed with adjustable headbands for a comfortable and secure fit, and some models offer additional features like replaceable outer lenses and ventilation systems to reduce heat buildup. Proper use and maintenance of a welding helmet are essential for ensuring effective protection and preventing long-term eye damage, such as arc eye or even blindness.
