It encompasses both digital archives and historiographical work, and can apply to official records, research datasets, museum catalogs, and collaborative writing where changes to texts, annotations, or metadata are kept as a traceable history.

In practice, historieversionering relies on methods that create and manage historical states. Common approaches include time-stamped snapshots, explicit version control, and the use of provenance metadata. Technologies such as version control systems, content-addressable storage, and standards like PROV (provenance) and PREMIS help establish who changed what and when, as well as the context of those changes.

Applications of historieversionering appear across libraries, archives, and museums that maintain multiple revisions of digitized documents; in wikis and content management systems that expose revision histories; and in academic or governmental research where scholars reconstruct or compare historical narratives by examining different versions of sources.
