Hiontapohjat

Hiontapohjat, often translated as grinding bases or ski bases, are the crucial bottom surfaces of skis and snowboards that come into contact with the snow. Their primary function is to enable smooth gliding and provide control. Modern hiontapohjat are typically made from polyethylene, a durable plastic material known for its low friction properties.

The specific type and composition of the polyethylene can vary depending on the intended use of the ski or snowboard. For racing skis, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is often used for its superior speed and durability. For recreational skis and snowboards, a blend of polyethylene with additives like graphite or waxes is common, offering a balance of performance and affordability. Graphite is often incorporated to improve glide, especially in dry or cold snow conditions, by reducing static electricity.

The surface of the hiontapohja is not perfectly smooth but is instead structured with a pattern, known as a grind or stone grind. This structure, typically a series of fine grooves or textures, is designed to channel away meltwater that forms between the base and the snow. This water acts as a lubricant, enhancing glide. The pattern of the grind is carefully chosen based on snow type, temperature, and intended discipline to optimize performance. Proper maintenance, including waxing and repairing damage, is essential for maintaining the integrity and performance of the hiontapohjat.
