Hiomista is a Finnish term that translates to "grinding" or "polishing" in English. It refers to a process of surface finishing that uses abrasive materials to remove a thin layer of material from a workpiece, resulting in a smoother, more refined surface. This can be achieved through various methods, including hand-grinding, machine-grinding, or using abrasive belts.

In woodworking, hiomista is a crucial step in preparing timber for finishing. It involves sanding down rough surfaces to remove saw marks, imperfections, and any residual roughness from previous stages of shaping. Different grits of sandpaper are used, starting with coarser grits to remove significant material and progressing to finer grits to achieve the desired smoothness.
