It forms crustose thalli up to 4 cm in diameter, with surfaces ranging from gray-green to pale yellow and a fine network of white margins and pale orange microstructures. The organism exhibits bioluminescence, emitting a soft blue-green glow under dark conditions, peaking around 510–520 nm. The photobiont partner is described as a chlorophyte alga or cyanobacterium.

Ecology: Hingetorru exists as a symbiosis between a fungal mycobiont and photosynthetic partners. It colonizes limestone and dolostone surfaces, favoring humid microhabitats in caves and rock faces with intermittent light. It can survive with minimal light and relies on moisture from cave air; it participates in mineral cycling via bioleaching of calcium carbonate.
