Hillintästrategia, often translated as containment strategy, is a foreign policy approach primarily used to prevent the expansion of an adversary's influence or ideology. This strategy aims to limit the spread of a perceived threat without necessarily engaging in direct, all-out conflict. The core idea is to isolate the target nation or movement, preventing it from growing stronger or gaining new allies, thereby neutralizing its potential danger over time.

Historical examples of containment strategies can be found in various geopolitical contexts, most notably during the Cold War. The United States employed a containment policy against the Soviet Union, seeking to prevent the spread of communism beyond its existing borders. This involved a combination of military, economic, and diplomatic measures, including alliances, foreign aid, and the threat of retaliation.

The implementation of a containment strategy can take several forms. It might involve forming military alliances with neighboring countries to create a buffer zone, providing economic assistance to nations at risk of falling under the adversary's sway, or engaging in covert operations to undermine the target's influence. Diplomatic efforts to isolate the adversary on the international stage are also a common tactic.
