Highpowertoweight, often abbreviated as HP/WT or P/W, is a dimensionless ratio used to express the performance capability of a vehicle, engine, or any power-producing system. It quantifies how much power is available for each unit of mass. A higher highpowertoweight ratio generally indicates better acceleration and overall performance.

The calculation of highpowertoweight involves dividing the system's power output by its weight. Power is typically measured in horsepower (hp) or kilowatts (kW), while weight is measured in pounds (lbs) or kilograms (kg). For example, if a car produces 200 horsepower and weighs 3000 pounds, its highpowertoweight ratio would be 0.067 hp/lb. To make comparisons easier, this ratio is often presented as hp per ton or kW per tonne.

This metric is particularly important in fields where efficiency and rapid acceleration are crucial, such as automotive engineering, motorsport, aviation, and even in the design of personal mobility devices. For instance, in Formula 1 racing, extremely high highpowertoweight ratios are achieved through powerful engines and lightweight chassis, enabling incredible speeds and maneuverability. Similarly, in aircraft design, a high ratio is essential for achieving lift and efficient flight.
