Hezhe

The Hezhe are a Tungusic-speaking indigenous people of Northeast China, primarily inhabiting Heilongjiang Province along the lower Amur River and its tributaries, near the Russian border. They are one of the 56 ethnic groups officially recognized by the People’s Republic of China.

Language and classification: The Hezhe speak the Hezhe language, a Tungusic language in the Northern branch. The language is endangered; most Hezhe are bilingual in Mandarin, with only a small number of fluent speakers remaining.

History and culture: Traditionally a riverine people, the Hezhe depended on fishing, hunting, and gathering in the Amur basin. They lived in villages along the river, with distinctive boat-building and weaving crafts. Their religious life included shamanism and the veneration of river spirits; in modern times, influences from Buddhism and Chinese folk religion appeared.

Relations and modern times: The Hezhe have interacted with neighboring groups such as the Nanai, Evenki, and Han Chinese, as well as Russian traders in the 19th century. In the People’s Republic era, cultural preservation programs and education policies have supported minority languages and customs, though many Hezhe communities have integrated into broader Chinese society.

Today: Hezhe communities remain small and dispersed, with ongoing efforts to preserve language and cultural heritage. The status of the Hezhe language is the subject of documentation and revitalization initiatives.
