Heréket

Heréket is a small village located in the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county of northeastern Hungary, within the Szikszó district. Situated in the northern part of the county, it lies along the Tisza River, which has historically played a significant role in the region’s geography and economy. The village is part of the traditional Great Plain (Nagyalföld) area, characterized by its flat terrain and fertile soil, making it suitable for agriculture.

Heréket has a rich history dating back to the medieval period, though its early records are limited. The village was first mentioned in written sources in the 13th century, though its exact founding date remains unclear. Like many Hungarian villages, it was settled by ethnic Hungarians during the migration waves of the 9th and 10th centuries. Over the centuries, the community was influenced by various empires, including the Ottoman Empire, which occupied the region in the 16th and 17th centuries. The village later became part of the Habsburg Monarchy and, following Hungary’s independence movements, was incorporated into the Kingdom of Hungary.

Today, Heréket maintains a rural character with a population of just over 1,000 residents, primarily engaged in farming, livestock breeding, and small-scale industry. The village features traditional Hungarian architecture, including wooden houses and churches, reflecting its cultural heritage. The local economy remains tied to agriculture, with crops such as wheat, corn, and sunflowers being common. The Tisza River also provides opportunities for fishing and transportation.

Culturally, Heréket participates in regional festivals and events, celebrating Hungarian traditions, music, and folklore. The village is part of the broader Szikszó area, which offers access to nearby towns and cities, including Miskolc, the largest urban center in the county. While Heréket retains its historical charm, it faces challenges common to rural Hungarian villages, including depopulation and economic pressures, though efforts to preserve its cultural identity continue.
