Herättyään

Herättyään is a Finnish non-finite verb form that functions as an adverbial participle of the verb herätä, meaning to wake up. It expresses an action that occurred before the action in the main clause, and is roughly equivalent to the English “having woken up” or “after waking up.” The form is commonly used in written Finnish to create concise, temporally ordered clauses.

In sentence structure, the participle clause introduced by herättyään usually shares the same subject as the main clause. For example: Herättyään hän meni keittiöön. (Having woken up, he went to the kitchen.) The clause is non-finite, so it does not carry its own subject or finite tense, but it sets the temporal relation for the following action.
