The pupa is typically encased in a protective shell known as a chrysalis for butterflies or a cocoon for moths. Within this casing, the caterpillar's body is broken down and reorganized into the adult form. This process involves the development of wings, antennae, legs, and reproductive organs.

The duration of the pupal stage varies significantly depending on the species and environmental conditions, such as temperature and humidity.
