Hermovälittäjäainejärjestelmä
Hermovälittäjäainejärjestelmä refers to the intricate network within the nervous system responsible for transmitting signals between neurons. This communication is achieved through chemical messengers known as neurotransmitters. When an electrical impulse reaches the end of a neuron, called the axon terminal, it triggers the release of neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft, the small gap between neurons. These neurotransmitters then diffuse across the cleft and bind to specific receptors on the surface of the next neuron, the dendrite. This binding event can either excite or inhibit the receiving neuron, thereby influencing its likelihood of firing its own electrical impulse.
There are numerous types of neurotransmitters, each with distinct roles and effects on the nervous system.
