Herbstfärbung

Herbstfärbung, also known as fall foliage or autumn colors, refers to the phenomenon of deciduous trees and shrubs changing their leaf color during the autumn season. This transformation is a natural process triggered by environmental changes, primarily a decrease in daylight hours and cooler temperatures.

As the days shorten and temperatures drop, chlorophyll, the pigment responsible for the green color in leaves, begins to break down. This breakdown unmasks other pigments that were present in the leaves all along but were hidden by the dominant green. Carotenoids, for example, are responsible for the yellow and orange hues. Anthocyanins, on the other hand, produce the vibrant reds and purples, and their production is often stimulated by bright sunlight and cool, crisp nights.
