Hengitysmekanismi

Hengitysmekanismi refers to the physiological processes involved in breathing, which are essential for the exchange of gases in the body. The primary gases exchanged are oxygen, which is inhaled into the lungs and transported to the body's tissues, and carbon dioxide, which is exhaled from the body's tissues and removed from the body. The hengitysmekanismi is controlled by the brainstem, specifically the medulla oblongata, which sends signals to the muscles involved in breathing.

The process of breathing begins with the inhalation phase, where the diaphragm, a large muscle located below the lungs, contracts and moves downward, increasing the volume of the thoracic cavity. This expansion of the chest cavity creates a negative pressure that draws air into the lungs. Simultaneously, the external intercostal muscles contract, further expanding the rib cage and aiding in the inhalation process.

During exhalation, the diaphragm relaxes and moves upward, reducing the volume of the thoracic cavity. The elastic recoil of the lungs and chest wall pushes air out of the lungs. The internal intercostal muscles also contract, assisting in the exhalation process.

Breathing is a continuous cycle, with inhalation and exhalation occurring in a regular pattern. The rate and depth of breathing can be influenced by various factors, including physical activity, emotional state, and environmental conditions. Abnormalities in the hengitysmekanismi can lead to respiratory disorders, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and sleep apnea.
