Hemtjänstutredning refers to the process of assessing an individual's needs for home care services in Sweden. This assessment is conducted by the municipality where the person resides. The primary goal is to determine what kind of support and assistance a person requires to live independently at home for as long as possible.

The process typically begins with an application for hemtjänst. A social worker or a designated assessor from the municipality will then schedule a meeting with the applicant, often at their home. During this meeting, various aspects of the individual's life are discussed, including personal hygiene, meal preparation, medication management, cleaning, shopping, and social interaction. The assessor will also consider any physical or cognitive limitations, as well as the support network available from family and friends.

Based on the information gathered, the municipality will make a decision about whether the applicant is eligible for hemtjänst and, if so, what services will be provided and to what extent. This decision is formalized in a document called a "beslut om hemtjänst" (decision on home care). The decision outlines the specific tasks to be performed, the frequency of visits, and the allocated time for each service.

It is important to note that hemtjänstutredning is an ongoing process. Needs can change over time, and the municipality has a responsibility to reassess the individual's situation periodically or when significant changes occur. This ensures that the provided home care remains appropriate and sufficient for the person's evolving needs. Individuals also have the right to appeal the municipality's decision if they disagree with the assessment or the offered services.
