Hemiparesis, commonly referred to as hemiparetic, is a medical condition characterized by partial paralysis or weakness affecting one side of the body. The term originates from the Greek words *hemi-* (meaning "half") and *-paresis* (meaning "weakness"), indicating that the impairment involves one hemisphere of the body. This condition can affect either the left or right side, depending on the underlying cause, and may involve the arm, leg, or both on the same side.

Hemiparesis can result from various underlying conditions, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, or other neurological disorders. In many cases, it is caused by damage to the motor pathways in the brain, such as those in the motor cortex or internal capsule. Symptoms typically include reduced muscle strength, difficulty coordinating movements, and impaired balance or coordination on the affected side.

The severity of hemiparesis varies widely among individuals, ranging from mild weakness to more pronounced paralysis. Some people may experience temporary hemiparesis, particularly after a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or stroke, while others may have persistent symptoms depending on the extent of brain damage. Rehabilitation therapies, such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, are often essential in helping individuals regain function and improve mobility.

Diagnosis of hemiparesis involves a thorough medical evaluation, including neurological exams, imaging studies (such as MRI or CT scans), and assessments of motor function.
