Hemelkedés, also known as hemoptysis, is the coughing up of blood from the respiratory tract. It can occur due to various causes, including lung cancer, tuberculosis, pneumonia, and bronchitis. The blood can come from the bronchi (large airways) or the alveoli (small air sacs in the lungs). Hemoptysis is typically classified based on the source of the blood: tracheobronchial (from the trachea and bronchi) or alveolar (from the alveoli).

The severity of hemoptysis can range from a small amount of blood to large volumes, which can be life-threatening. Risk factors for hemoptysis include smoking, exposure to environmental pollutants, and a history of respiratory diseases. Diagnosis often involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, and imaging tests such as chest X-rays or CT scans.

Treatment depends on the underlying cause. For example, if the cause is a lung infection, antibiotics may be prescribed. In cases of lung cancer, treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy. In severe cases, emergency medical care may be required to prevent complications such as airway obstruction or severe blood loss.
