Heliosentrisk

Heliosentrisk refers to an astronomical model or viewpoint in which the Sun is at the center of the solar system and the planets, including Earth, orbit around it. This contrasts with the geocentric model, which places Earth at the center and has celestial bodies revolving around it.

Historically, the idea of a Sun-centered cosmos was proposed early by Aristarchus of Samos, but it gained little traction at the time. In the 16th century Nicolaus Copernicus formulated a detailed heliocentric model, arguing that the Earth is a planet that orbits the Sun. His work, De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (1543), is often seen as the start of the scientific revolution. Later, Johannes Kepler refined the model with his three laws (1609–1619), showing that planetary orbits are ellipses rather than perfect circles. Galileo Galilei’s telescopic observations, such as the phases of Venus and the moons of Jupiter, provided empirical support for heliocentrism. The model faced strong opposition from contemporary authorities, but by the 17th century it became the prevailing description in astronomy. Direct observational proof in the form of stellar parallax was not achieved until the 19th century, with Friedrich Bessel’s measurement in 1838.

Modern usage and significance: The heliocentric view underpins contemporary astronomy and space exploration. It provides the standard reference frame for computing planetary positions, spacecraft trajectories, and orbital dynamics. The term also appears in specialized contexts, such as heliocentric coordinates and heliocentric distances, to describe measurements relative to the Sun rather than to Earth.
