Heimilislæknis is an Icelandic term that refers to a general practitioner who provides medical care primarily within a rural or community setting, often serving small or isolated populations. Historically, before modern transportation and the expansion of hospitals, each village or farmstead in Iceland had a heimilislæknis who acted as the first point of contact for health concerns. These physicians were responsible for diagnosing illnesses, prescribing treatments, performing minor surgical procedures, and delivering basic preventive care such as immunizations and maternal support.
