Heilsuþjónusta, meaning healthcare services, refers to the provision of medical care and public health services to individuals and communities. In Iceland, this system is largely publicly funded and administered, ensuring access to a range of healthcare professionals and facilities. The primary goal of heilsuþjónusta is to maintain and improve the health and well-being of the population through preventive measures, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation.

The Icelandic healthcare system is structured with primary care services at the local level, often provided by health centers (heilsugæslustöðvar). These centers are the first point of contact for most individuals, offering general medical consultations, vaccinations, and health screenings. For more specialized medical needs, individuals are referred to hospitals and specialist clinics. The Landspítali University Hospital in Reykjavík is the main tertiary care institution, handling complex medical conditions and advanced treatments.

Public health initiatives are also a crucial component of heilsuþjónusta. These efforts focus on disease prevention, health promotion, and environmental health.
