Heildarmynd

Heildarmynd is a term used in Icelandic to denote a whole-body image produced in medical imaging. It describes an image or set of images that provide an overview of the entire body, rather than focusing on a single region. The concept is relevant in radiology, oncology, trauma care and screening contexts, where a broad survey can help identify widespread or unexpected findings that might not be apparent in regional studies.

The term combines words meaning “whole” and “image,” reflecting its purpose as an inclusive representation of the body’s anatomy and potential pathology. In practice, heildarmynd may refer to different imaging modalities capable of covering the entire body. These include full-body radiography, whole-body computed tomography (WBCT), whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (WB-MRI), and, in nuclear medicine, PET-CT or similar whole-body scans. Each modality provides different types of information; radiographs are often used for rapid assessment, while WBCT, WB-MRI, and PET-CT offer more detailed anatomic or metabolic data.

Applications vary by clinical context. Trauma teams may rely on WBCT for rapid whole-body assessment; oncologists may use WB imaging for staging or surveillance; metabolic or infectious workups may benefit from whole-body MRI or PET-CT. Limitations include radiation exposure (notably with WBCT), longer imaging times for comprehensive MRI protocols, cost, accessibility, and the need for specialized interpretation. Whole-body imaging is typically used judiciously, complementing targeted studies rather than replacing region-specific examinations.
