Heijastusetäisyys is a Finnish term that translates to "reflection distance" in English. It is primarily used in optics and photography to describe the distance between an object and its reflection in a mirror or other reflective surface. This concept is fundamental to understanding how mirrors form virtual images and how they interact with light.

In the context of a plane mirror, the reflection distance is equal to the object distance. This means that if an object is placed one meter in front of a flat mirror, its virtual image will appear to be one meter behind the mirror. The image formed by a plane mirror is always virtual, upright, and laterally inverted, meaning it is flipped horizontally.

The principle of equal object and image distances also applies to curved mirrors, although the nature of the image can change depending on the mirror's curvature and the object's position. For convex mirrors, the virtual image is always smaller than the object and located behind the mirror, with the reflection distance being less than the object distance. Concave mirrors can form both real and virtual images. When forming a virtual image, the image appears behind the mirror, and the reflection distance is greater than the object distance.
