Hedelmöityshoitotekniikat, commonly known as assisted reproductive technologies (ART), are medical procedures used to help individuals and couples achieve pregnancy when natural conception is difficult. These techniques involve the manipulation of eggs, sperm, and embryos in a laboratory setting. The most well-known and widely used ART method is in vitro fertilization (IVF). In IVF, eggs are retrieved from a woman's ovaries and fertilized by sperm in a laboratory dish. The resulting embryo(s) are then transferred to the uterus.

Another technique is intrauterine insemination (IUI), where prepared sperm is directly inserted into the uterus around the time of ovulation. This method is often used for milder forms of infertility. Other advanced ART techniques include intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg, and preimplantation genetic testing (PGT), which allows for screening of embryos for genetic abnormalities before transfer.

ART treatments are typically recommended for a variety of conditions including blocked fallopian tubes, male factor infertility, ovulation disorders, endometriosis, and unexplained infertility. The success rates of these techniques vary depending on factors such as the age of the woman, the cause of infertility, and the specific clinic. While ART has enabled many to build families, it is a complex process that involves medical interventions, emotional considerations, and financial costs. Research and development continue to advance ART, aiming to improve success rates and accessibility.
