Hedelmöittämisellä, often translated as fertilization, refers to the biological process by which male and female gametes unite to form a zygote, initiating the development of a new organism. This fundamental process is central to sexual reproduction in a vast array of organisms, from single-celled protists to complex multicellular animals and plants.

In animals, fertilization typically involves the fusion of a sperm cell with an ovum (egg cell). This union can occur externally, where the egg and sperm are released into the environment and meet by chance, as seen in many aquatic species. Alternatively, fertilization can be internal, occurring within the reproductive tract of the female, as is common in mammals, birds, and reptiles. The fusion of gametes restores the diploid number of chromosomes, with half originating from each parent.

In plants, fertilization involves the transfer of pollen, containing male gametes, to the female reproductive structures, typically the pistil. Following pollination, a pollen tube grows, delivering the male gametes to the ovule, where fertilization of the egg cell occurs. In flowering plants, this process is often a double fertilization, where one male gamete fuses with the egg to form the embryo, and another fuses with the central cell to form the endosperm, a nutrient-rich tissue that nourishes the developing embryo.

The successful completion of fertilization is crucial for the continuation of species. It ensures genetic diversity through the recombination of parental genes and drives evolutionary adaptation. Various mechanisms exist to optimize the chances of fertilization, including behavioral adaptations, physiological synchrony between gametes, and structural adaptations of reproductive organs.
