Hedelmöittyy, known in English as fertilization or conception, is the biological process by which a male gamete (sperm) merges with a female gamete (egg) to form a fertilized egg or zygote. This process is fundamental to sexual reproduction in many organisms, including humans.

In humans, fertilization typically occurs in the fallopian tubes following sexual intercourse. During ejaculation, sperm are deposited in the female reproductive tract and travel through the cervix and uterus toward the fallopian tubes. If an ovum (egg), released during ovulation, is present in the tube, sperm can penetrate its outer layer and fuse with the egg’s membrane. This fusion triggers a series of biochemical reactions, resulting in the activation of the egg and the beginning of embryonic development.

The process of fertilization involves several key steps. First, sperm undergo capacitation, a series of physiological changes that enable them to penetrate the egg. Once the sperm contacts the egg, it undergoes the acrosome reaction, releasing enzymes that facilitate entry. When a sperm successfully penetrates the egg’s zona pellucida, the sperm and egg membranes fuse, allowing the sperm nucleus to enter the egg and combine genetic material.

Fertilization restores the diploid number of chromosomes, creating a single-cell organism with a complete set of genetic information. This zygote then begins cell division and travels to the uterus, where it may implant and develop into an embryo.
