Hedelmöittymistä refers to the process of fertilization in biological reproduction. It is the fusion of male and female gametes, typically sperm and egg, to form a zygote. This event is a crucial step in sexual reproduction, leading to the development of a new individual.

In humans and many other animals, fertilization occurs internally. The male deposits sperm into the female's reproductive tract, and if conditions are favorable, sperm will travel to meet an egg released from the ovary. This meeting usually takes place in the fallopian tube. Upon contact, the sperm penetrates the egg's outer layers, and the genetic material from both gametes combines. This fusion creates a single cell, the zygote, which contains a complete set of chromosomes.

In plants, fertilization involves the transfer of pollen, containing male gametes, to the ovule, which contains the female gamete. This can occur through various mechanisms, including wind, water, or animals. Once the pollen reaches the ovule, a pollen tube grows, delivering the male gametes to fertilize the egg cell, leading to the formation of a seed.

External fertilization is common in aquatic environments, where both male and female gametes are released into the water for fusion. This strategy is employed by many fish and amphibians. The success of fertilization in both internal and external settings depends on factors such as gamete viability, environmental conditions, and the synchrony of gamete release.
