He3based

He3based is a term that refers to technologies, concepts, or proposals that primarily utilize Helium-3 (³He) as a key component or resource. Helium-3 is an isotope of helium with a nucleus containing two protons and one neutron. It is rare on Earth but thought to be abundant on the Moon, where it is deposited by the solar wind over billions of years.

The primary interest in Helium-3 stems from its potential use as a fuel in nuclear fusion reactors. Specifically, it is a candidate for aneutronic fusion reactions, such as the deuterium-Helium-3 (D-³He) reaction. This type of fusion is attractive because it produces fewer high-energy neutrons compared to deuterium-tritium fusion, which is currently the most studied fusion reaction. The reduction in neutron radiation would simplify reactor design, reduce radioactive waste, and potentially allow for the direct conversion of fusion energy into electricity.

However, the practical implementation of He3based fusion faces significant challenges. The scarcity of Helium-3 on Earth makes terrestrial extraction unfeasible. Lunar mining is considered a potential source, but the technology and infrastructure required for such an endeavor are still in their nascent stages. Furthermore, achieving and sustaining the high temperatures and pressures necessary for D-³He fusion reactions is a formidable scientific and engineering hurdle. Despite these difficulties, research and theoretical exploration into He3based applications continue, driven by the long-term potential for a clean and abundant energy source.
