Havelland

The Havelland is a historical and geographical region in western Brandenburg, Germany, centered along the Havel River. It lies to the west of Berlin and forms part of the rural district Landkreis Havelland. The landscape is defined by the Havel valley, with flat terrain, braided river channels, wetlands, forests and agricultural land. The river has shaped settlement, transportation routes, and the local economy for centuries.

The name Havelland is used for both the region and the surrounding district, created in 1993 through the merger of former districts. The area includes protected natural areas such as Naturpark Westhavelländer, one of Germany’s largest nature parks, which protects extensive wetlands and hosts many migratory birds, making it a key site for conservation and nature tourism.

Economy and culture: Agriculture, forestry and tourism are important. The Havel enables boating and cycling tourism, with several historic towns along its banks. Rathenow, known for its historic optics industry, and Nauen are notable centers in the Havelland district. The region is associated with Theodor Fontane, whose writings about the Mark Brandenburg highlight the Havelland landscape.
