Havaintotyyppejä, meaning "types of perceptions" in Finnish, refers to the different ways in which living organisms gather and process information from their environment. These types are fundamental to survival, enabling organisms to interact with their surroundings, find resources, avoid danger, and reproduce. Broadly, perceptions can be categorized based on the sensory modality involved.

Visual perception is perhaps the most commonly understood, involving the detection and interpretation of light. This allows organisms to see shapes, colors, movement, and depth. Auditory perception deals with sound waves, enabling the detection of noises, speech, and other sonic cues which can signal threats, prey, or communication. Olfactory perception, or the sense of smell, detects airborne chemical molecules, crucial for finding food, identifying mates, and recognizing territories. Gustatory perception, the sense of taste, involves detecting chemicals dissolved in liquids, primarily used for evaluating food.

Tactile perception relates to touch and pressure, providing information about physical contact, texture, and temperature. Proprioception is the sense of the relative position of one's own parts of the body and strength of effort being employed in movement. Other, less commonly discussed, types include thermoception (sensing temperature), nociception (sensing pain), and magnetoreception (sensing magnetic fields), which is observed in migratory animals. The specific types and sophistication of an organism's perceptions are shaped by evolutionary pressures and its ecological niche.
