HauteSûre

Haute-Sûre, or the Upper Sûre, is a region in the north-western part of Luxembourg named for the upper stretch of the Sûre river. It is the core area of the Parc naturel de la Haute-Sûre – Our, a protected landscape network established to preserve the natural and cultural heritage of the Sûre and Our river valleys while supporting sustainable tourism and local communities.

Geographically, the area lies in the Oesling, a northern Luxembourg plateau within the Ardennes. The landscape features rolling hills, forests and small-scale farming, as well as the Lac de la Haute-Sûre, a reservoir created by damming the Sûre. The Sûre river forms the principal valley, while the Our river runs through the broader northern countryside toward the border with Belgium. The region includes historic villages and rural settlements that reflect traditional Luxembourgish rural life.

Biologically, the Parc naturel de la Haute-Sûre – Our protects a variety of habitats, including deciduous and coniferous forests, wetlands, meadows and riverine ecosystems. It supports a diversity of flora and fauna characteristic of the north-west Luxembourg countryside and maintains scenic landscapes that are important for biodiversity, recreation and heritage.

Economy and tourism in Haute-Sûre are centered on forestry, agriculture and outdoor recreation. Visitors commonly explore hiking and cycling trails, birdwatching areas, and water-based activities around the lake. The fortress town of Esch-sur-Sûre, along with other cultural landmarks and traditional villages, is a focal point for visitors and for regional identity.
