Hauptschlüssel is the German term for a master key, a key designed to operate multiple locks within a keyed system. In traditional mechanical locking systems, each lock has its own change key that opens only that lock. A Hauptschlüssel, in contrast, is capable of opening all locks within a defined group or level of the system. Such systems may also include higher levels of keys that can open an even larger subset of locks, forming a hierarchical keying structure.
