Hatványkitevi, often translated as exponent or power, is a fundamental concept in mathematics. It represents repeated multiplication of a base number by itself. The general form is written as a^n, where 'a' is the base and 'n' is the exponent. The exponent 'n' indicates how many times the base 'a' is multiplied by itself. For instance, 2^3 means 2 multiplied by itself three times, resulting in 2 * 2 * 2 = 8.

The exponent can be a positive integer, a negative integer, zero, or even a fraction or irrational number, each with specific rules for calculation. A positive integer exponent, as in the example above, signifies straightforward repeated multiplication. A zero exponent, regardless of the base (except for 0^0, which is often considered indeterminate), always results in 1 (e.g., 5^0 = 1). A negative exponent indicates the reciprocal of the base raised to the positive version of the exponent (e.g., 2^-3 = 1/2^3 = 1/8). Fractional exponents represent roots, such as x^(1/n) being the nth root of x.
