Hattiesburg

Hattiesburg is a city located in Forrest County and Lamar County, Mississippi, United States. It is the fifth-largest city in Mississippi by population and serves as the principal city of the Hattiesburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is situated in the Pine Belt region of southeastern Mississippi, approximately 100 miles north of the Gulf Coast.

Hattiesburg was founded in 1882 by William Hardy, a surveyor who recognized the area's potential as a railroad hub. The city grew rapidly due to its strategic location at the intersection of two major railroads. It was named after Hardy's wife, Hattie. During the early 20th century, Hattiesburg became a significant center for lumber and timber production.
