Hashtunnisteita, often shortened to "hashtags," are a metadata tag used on social media platforms and other microblogging services. They consist of a word or phrase prefixed with the hash symbol (#). When a user includes a hashtag in their post, it becomes hyperlinked. Clicking on this link or searching for the hashtag will display all other public posts that contain the same tag. This functionality allows for the aggregation of discussions and the discovery of new content and communities.

The use of hashtags originated on Twitter in 2007 and has since been adopted by numerous other platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and TikTok. They serve multiple purposes. Primarily, they increase the visibility of a post by making it searchable and discoverable by users who may not already follow the author. Secondly, they help users follow trending topics and participate in broader conversations.
